My RN Letters
My Royal Navy Letters
Synopsis: This book is the autobiography of John Nixon and his career in the Royal Navy. Leaving home at 15, he entered the new-entry establishment, HMS Ganges. Other establishments included HMS Collingwood, HMS Mauritius, HMS Mercury, HMS Sultan and Nato Headquarters in Brussels. His ships were HMS Bulwark (evacuation of British forces from Malta), HMS Falmouth (during the Falklands War) and HMS Kent. Recording the day-to-day life of a rating in the Radio Electrical Department, and then later as Instructor Lieutenant, his recollections are based on the letters that were kept by his parents. Education and promotions represent the 'other letters' of his story. His experiences reflect the realities of service careers with a focus on the sociological and psychological impacts on family life. Published in 2013 by Pinewood Hill, ISBN: 978-0-9926788-0-7.
